Soccer Kits Plus Supplementary Challenge Cup Final - 3rd May 2008

Shortwood United 4 – 2 Ardley United

Ardley United the holders of the Supplementary Cup were playing their second cup final of the season having lost in the final of the Floodlit Cup to Kidlington. Their opponents, Shortwood United, who finished 5th in the Premier Division were looking to end the season on a high.

The game opened with a bang, in the 1st minute Shortwood Luke Bennyworth pushed Ryan Wiffin and Danny Mason (left) converted the penalty.

Four minutes later Shortwood leveled when Will Steadman headed against a defender from a corner for the equaliser. Both teams found it difficult to break down defences on just before the half time break Shortwood took the lead when Andy Hoskins put a through ball to Chris Davis to beat the Ardley keeper.

Half Time: Shortwood United 2 - 1 Ardley United

Half way through an even second half James Coates increased Shortwood’s lead when he hammered in a 25 yard drive from an Ardley clearance.

This caused Ardley to throw more players forward and they pulled a goal back seven minutes from time when Leon Gordon (right) headed in a cross.

With Ardley now in the ascendency and going for broke Three Shortwood players were left to run clear and it was Matt Green who hit Shortwood’s 4th from a Jody Beavon pass in the last minute.

League Vice President Hugh Arnold presented the match mementos to the teams and Match Officials.

Ardley United 1 - 3 Hook Norton • 26th April

With the managers of both teams in control for the last time in the League season, as far as Hook Norton was concerned, the script could not have been written any better.

Hooky player manager Ben Spiero completed his reign by scoring the final goal of the match in which his successor.

In a very evenly balanced first half, with Hooky having the greater amount of possession with the slope and wind in their favour, Davies began to make his presence felt on the right hand side and it was the 19 years’ old player who opened the scoring on 31 minutes when he fired the ball through a sea of legs into the left hand corner of the Ardley net after controlling a headed flick from Harris, following a free kick from Shaun Lambourne on the left hand side of the field.

Shortly afterwards, the same player was unlucky not to double the Hooky score line. Once more, he shot from about 20 yards out on the right side of the pitch, only to see his superb curling shot deflect off the crossbar.

Then, on the stroke of half time, a free kick by Davies was touched into the Ardley net after a goal line melee, only to be disallowed by referee Kevin Norris for an infringement

Half Time: Ardley United 0 Hook Norton 1

With the slope and wind now in the home sides favour, Ardley were expected to put the pressure on Hooky and got on equal terms after just 47 minutes, the signs began to look ominous for the visitors.

The equalizing goal came when visiting keeper Richard Meadows failed to intercept a through ball, allowing Andy Prescott to nip in and lob the ball over his head into the empty Hooky net.

Far from becoming demoralised, Hooky then injected more steel into their game, with captain Chris Jackson being a consistent tower of strength at centre half.

On the hour mark, tough tackling Griffin replaced Daniel Szczukiewicz, after which Howkins replaced Carl Standen and Spiero replaced Crognale.

In the final 10 minutes of the match, things turned decisively in the visitors favour .  On 81 minutes, a Davies corner from the left was headed in at the near post by Howkins (his first goal for Hooky) and then, on 85 minutes, a high ball from Harris over the Ardley defence found Spiero in the clear with just the home ‘keeper to beat.

This was a heaven sent opportunity which Spiero was not going to miss for so many reasons and he did not disappoint, lobbing Matt Dixon with precision and then seeing the ball fall into the back of the Ardley net.

Perhaps not the completion to the League season that Ardley would have wanted, but the football for Ardley is not over yet with the SoccerKits Plus Supplementary Final to be played at Fairford Town on Saturday May 3rd. The team will be up for making it a final day of Ardley management for Dan Still to remember.

SoccerKits Plus Supplementary Cup Semi Final • 22nd April
Wantage Town 2 – 1 Ardley United (Second Leg) Ardley win 3 – 2 on aggregate

In an extremely entertaining and fast paced game, Wantage typified their season, when they contrived to recover the two goal deficit from the first leg by applying immense effort, only to have a moment’s defensive lapse that enabled Ardley to reclaim the advantage by nicking a single goal.

In a frenetic first half, Wantage took the game to Ardley from the start, creating several chances that, in a calmer mood, Tom Austin and Ellis Langford in particular, would normally have put away. Bustling Wantage striker Gary Hartley had the ball in the net on the half hour, cleanly getting to an Austin cross and forcing the ball past Matt Dixon in the Ardley goal, only to be penalised for a foul on the keeper. As Wantage pressed they were vulnerable to Ardley breakaways, and several times the Wantage defence had to recover quickly to keep Ardley at bay.

Half Time: 0 - 0

The pace stepped up from frenetic to frantic in the second half. The Wantage fight back began in the 52nd minute when Captain Gary Swann firmly connected with a Tom Austin corner to give the home side and their loyal support some hope. Those hopes were further raised when Wantage squared the semi-final, Ellis Langford, with his back to goal, cleverly taking control of the ball only yards from Matt Dixon’s line, chested the ball down and turning to drive high into the Ardley net. Wantage kept up the charge and should have gone ahead overall when Danny Keen slipped his marker and broke away, only to drive the ball the wrong side of Dixon’s post.

But applied consistency has not been Wantage’s strong suit this season, and in the 70th minute, a defensive lapse gave space and time to Ardley substitute Steve Garbutt to drive past Luke Alford to dash the hopes and ambitions that, up to that moment, the Wantage performance had inspired. Wantage huffed and puffed up to the final whistle, but to their credit, Ardley defended firmly from a position of strength.

Ardley United 2 - 3 Shortwood United • 19th April

Ardley took Shortwood to the wire before Wood secured the points with a last gasp winner.

Gusty conditions and a bumpy pitch helped neither side and the first half was scrappy and the passing was poor with both sides guilty of giving the ball away far too easily. The second half was better though and richly entertaining.

Wood should have taken the lead after 10 minutes when Ben Pugh’s corner drifted across the six yard box with no one alert enough to touch the ball home. Pugh also ran a cross along the cross bar while at the other end Pearce had to be alert to deal with a shot from Carrick.

Ardley took the lead after 29 minutes. Wood lost possession and Ardley broke at speed and a through ball found Andy Prescott who drilled his shot past Pearce.

Both sides, then had chances – Adam Beckett missed from 6 yards for Ardley, Chris Davis headed too close to the keeper, before Wood equalised on the stroke of half time, with  Pete Smith getting the final touch at the far post from a corner.

Half Time: 1 - 1

After the break Wood came out and started to dominate. A corner bounced about pin ball style and Wood had several chances to put it away before Bennyworth poked the ball wide, and Pugh appeared to be fouled in the area before Wood took the lead after 70 minutes.

Bennyworth’s long throw was flicked on by Smith and Davis headed home from close range. Smith just failed to get on the end of Davis’ knock back and Wood’s inability to kill the game off let Ardley back in. Carrick shot just wide and Beckett stung Pearce’s hands before Ardley equalised after 81 minutes. Adam Beckett’s volley from 25 yards rattling in off the crossbar.

Pearce then had to tip over a Mason free kick but Wood found space to brake quickly in the last minute. Hoskins long ball over the top was chased down by Ngwa who refused to give up. His persistence paid dividends as he took the ball round the defender and shot home to his, and all his Shortwood team mates delight.

SoccerKits Plus Supplementary Cup Semi Final • 17th April
Ardley United 2 – 0 Wantage Town (First Leg)

This was a hard fought cup-tie, in which neither side was able to produce any flowing football. Played on a hard and bumpy pitch, both teams struggled to exert control over a ball with an unpredictable bounce.

The difference between the sides was the strength of the Ardley defence, which neutralised, with relative ease, any threat that Wantage could muster.

Two fine left footed strikes from Ardley forward Phil Martin sealed the game for Ardley. The first, on the point of half time, came from a rebound from his own free kick, the ball being neatly placed away from Wantage keeper Luke Alford.

Martin repeated the feat in the second half, turning the Wantage defence to put the ball on to his trusty left foot and driving a shot past Alford, in off of the post. In games like this, when chances are few, missed opportunities effect the outcome of the game.

Had Wantage’s Danny Keen not driven the ball over the bar from close-in, in the first minute, the game’s outcome may not have been the same. Whilst Wantage lost experienced defender Chris Copp, through a reoccurrence of a key injury, their defence generally coped with the threat posed by Ardley’s forwards. It was in attack where Wantage failed to penetrate a well organised Ardley defence.

In the second leg at Wantage on Tuesday, 22nd April, the team scoring the first goal will determine the shape of the game. One goal scored will get Wantage back into this tie, but a goal conceded will put the tie beyond reach.

Ardley United 3 - 2 Kidlington FC • 14th April

Ardley came from behind to take three points and go some way to avenge the defeat by opponents Kidlington in the HPL Floodlit Cup Final last week.

Ardley were brimming with confidence after beating promotion contenders Hungerford at the weekend, but Dan Still was forced into more changes in personnel as keeper Matt Dixon (swollen knee), Tom Green (work), Jason Costella (work) and Greg Gardner (travelling) were all missing from the line up who achieved the win at the weekend. Also still without Chris Hill, Andy Prescott and Darren Beckett, the squad was stretched to the limit.

It looked to be a long evening as Ardley failed to create any real chances of note in the first half. Kidlington were much brighter with Jordan Parker, making his debut for the Kidlington first team, scoring in the 13th and 23rd minutes, establishing a comfortable lead.

Half Time: Ardley United 0 Kidlington 2

At half time Ardley replaced Danny Mason with Chris Johnson, which altered the shape of the team. Johnson who had been left out of the squad at the weekend returned with a point to prove, and he began to gain a strangle hold on the midfield from the start of the second half. Ardley reduced the arrears in the 46th minute when Phil Martin's excellent corner was headed home by Ian Trott.

Ardley failed to build on the goal, the game was starting to get scrappy, until Adam Richmonds' clipped pass was headed down by Ryan Wiffen for Adam Beckett to fire home the equaliser.

Looking to grab the deciding advantage, Johnson then forced Kidlington keeper Steve Benbow into a smart save, to deny Johnson the chance.

The deciding strike came in 85th minute, Adam Richmond's penetrating run led to a scramble in the box, Chris Johnson demonstrated sublime close control to steal the ball and slide it under the Benbow. Johnson got the goal he had been seeking, to give the home side their second league win in three days.

Hungerford Town 1 - 2 Ardley United • 12th April

The match was fairly even early on with neither side able to break out of midfield. It came as a surprise after 15 minutes when a miss punch under pressure by town keeper, Paul Thompson, went straight to Leon Gordon whose angled shot went into the net to give the visitor’s the lead.

This opened up the game somewhat but no real chances materialised. Jamie Gosling tried a long shot from the halfway line from a miss kick by Ardley ‘keeper Matt Dixon but his shot drifted wide.

The last fifteen minutes saw Hungerford up the pressure but the nearest they came to an equaliser was a diving header by Nick Macrae who couldn’t quite make full contact and the ball went wide.

Half Time: 0 – 1

Hungerford came out after the break in a determined mood and pushed players forward from the kick off. This allowed Ardley more space up front and produced an exciting 45 minutes with chances at both ends.

But it took Hungerford almost thirty minutes to breakdown the Ardley defence to level, a free kick into the penalty area found Sean Terry who turned and struck the ball into the net.

The last ten minutes erupted as tension and frustration overwhelmed Hungerford, first Luke Brewer was dismissed for abusive language and he was followed two minutes later by Paul Bedwell for a late and violent tackle that caught the Ardley player high on the shin.

The nine men of Hungerford pressed forward searching for the winner and had several half chances but in the second minute of added time Steve Garbutt broke away from the lone Hungerford defender and ran from the halfway line to draw and beat the home keeper and net the winner.

The result moved United to 13th place in the league table, on 51 points with three games remaining in this seasons League campaign.

Wiffen Marvellous • 5th April

AFC Wallingford 0 Ardley United 11

Ryan Wiffen returned to Ardley United hitting five goals in his inaugural match. Ardley ran riot in South Oxfordshire beating AFC Wallingford 11 - 0.

Wiffen was part of last years Ardley squad which achieved much recognition in the Sport Italia Hellenic League , however he left in search of guaranteed football. Wiffen went back to his old club Winslow, in the The Molten Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One, with whom he has notched 26 goals this season in just 17 League and League Cup games for the club. He returned to Ardley just before the March 31st deadline and marked his 2008 debut, played at Wallingford Sports Park, with a first half hat-trick, before logging two more goals in the second half.

The other six goals in the fixture came from, Ian Trott and Tom Smith getting a brace each, plus Leon Gordon and Danny Mason.

Manager Dan Still was delighted with Ryan's contribution, commenting: "I haven't had the best of luck with strikers this year, it has definitely been a revolving door "up top". I think in hindsight I should of brought Ryan back a bit sooner as he compliments the style of play, but I am just pleased he has agreed to help out until the end of the season and I hope he hasn't used all the goals up in one go".

Ardley United 0 - North Leigh 1 • 1st April

Ardley fell to a single goal scored at the end of the first half against table topping North Leigh. However promotion candidates North Leigh were lucky to escape with 3 points after a game of two very different halves.

The Ardley team were without Adam Richmond, Skipper Tom Green, Andy Prescott, Darren Beckett and Rob Carrick. Adam Beckett sat on the bench but was really unable to take any part also due to injury.

With so many players missing and only one fit striker Manager Dan Still deployed a 4-5-1 system, with North Leigh playing 3-5-2 the midfield soon became very congested.

Ardley defended for the majority of the half restricting the visitors to long range efforts, but Simms did get through after 20 minutes, but keeper Matt Dixon saved well with his feet.

North Leigh's pressure grew and grew, though it looked as if Ardley would see out the half when a lob from the edge of the box beat Dixon, to put North Leigh ahead on 43 minutes.

Ardley almost responded within a minute when Phil Martin's cross was headed onto the bar by Leon Gordon.

Half Time: Ardley United 0 - North Leigh 1

In the second period Ardley grew in confidence, passing the ball better than the opposition, Steve Garbutt linked well with Gordon before firing wide from the edge of the box.

Chris Hill, Gordon and Martin all had half chances before Ardley's big chance went begging. Martin crossed for Garbutt who was six yards out, with the goal at his mercy he blazed the ball over the bar.

In the final minute Ardley even had keeper Matt Dixon in the opposition box for a corner in an attempt to grab a point, but were not able to force the ball home.

Ardley United 4 - Marlow United 2 • 18th March - SoccerKits Plus Supplementary Cup

Ardley made it through to the semi final of the SoccerKits Plus Supplementary cup after a bizarre first half that saw five goals and a sending off.

Marlow opened the scoring in the first minute when Danny Mason failed to take control of a situation and a poor kick by keeper Matt Dixon saw Coul lob the ball into an empty net.

Ardley responded well, both Mason and Phil Martin missed glorious chances before Carrick combined with Adam Richmond, who provided the cross for Chris Hill to tap in from close range.

The Marlow keeper was incensed feeling that Carrick was offside and ran to the assistant using a string of foul language, leaving the referee little option but to administer a red card.

Ardley took advantage as Marlow tried to settle. Adam Gordon latched on to a poor clearance, lobbing home from 25 yards to get his sixth goal in as many games. However Marlow got on level terms again catching Richmond sleeping with a long ball in to the left hand channel, which Flint finished well for 2-2.

Directly from the re-start kick off Ardley hit back winning a corner, from which Mason poked home Hill's downward header.

Half Time: Ardley United 3 Marlow United 2

The second half was one way traffic as Ardley used the man advantage to keep the ball. Adam Feaver added to his tally with a smart finish flicking the ball over his shoulder before passing the ball into the net.

Ardley had more chances but the game fizzled out to seal Ardley's passage into the semi final and keep the holders dream alive of defending the trophy in another final appearance.

Milton United 3 - Ardley United 2 • 15th March

Ardley twice gave away the lead in a tight contest at The Heights, but poor defensive play ultimately cost them even a share of the points.

Milton started brighter, Ardley needed Mason and Willment to keep the home side at bay. Ardley started to edge into the game, on 37 minutes the increase of pressure brought reward. An Adam Richmond free kick was chested down by Chris Hill, who played to Leon Gordon who finished by firing a left foot strike into the bottom corner.

With 45 minutes on the watch Ardley should have doubled the lead when Darren Beckett crossed to an unmarked Chris Hill, who in the middle of goal missed the target with a header that looked easier to score than miss.

Half Time Milton United 0-1 Ardley United

Only minutes into the second half Ardley gave away the ball in the top third, to be punished as Adam Bailey gave Milton the perfect start to the half.

Ardley regained composure and started to create opportunity. Chris Hill, Leon Gordon and Adam Beckett all had chances before a moment of brilliance from Hill in the box produced a wonderful save from Craig Griffiths in the Milton goal. However from the resulting corner the ball bounced around the six yard line, with Chris Hill getting a foot to it to poke home on 65 minutes.

Rather than kick on Ardley got very deep, not aided by Chris Johnson conceding a succession of free kicks adding more pressure on the Ardley goal.

On 69 minutes Ardley cleared the ball from a corner but stayed in the area and failed to apply any pressure on the ball. Milton's left sided defender Matt Shelton took full advantage, beating Matt Dixon at the near post.

Ardley keeper Dixon made several key saves including a one on one with Jemel Johnson, though he could do nothing to stop Milton taking the lead when he saved well again with his feet, only for Gavin Jones to tap in the rebound.

Alex Feaver and Chris Hill had half chances to get the score level, but Ardley failed to mount any sustained pressure to get the much needed goal and a share of the points.

After the match manager Dan Still commented "It was a display that lacked discipline in our shape, attitude and a distinct lack of brain at times. The players are fully aware how unhappy I am with them and I hope for better on Tuesday against Marlow".

HPL Floodlit Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg • 11th March
Ardley United 1 - Flackwell Heath 0 - (Agg. Score Ardley United 5 - Flackwell Heath 0 )

Ardley United bounced back after the home defeat in the League on Saturday with a win that secured another Cup Final for the club, this time in the HPL Floodlit Cup. With a four goal advantage from the first leg of the semi-final the odds looked good to progress, but nothing was guaranteed and the unexpected happens in football.

Ardley secured their place in the floodlight cup final with a 1-0 win on the night, beating Flackwell 5-0 on aggregate.
The advantageous score line from the first leg possibly dictated why this game never really got going. But Flackwell Heath's players and supporters were a credit to football and their club by never giving up.

The deadlock was broken in the 67 minute with the only goal of the game, scored by the home side, when Chris Hill swept a long ball from Tom Smith.

Chris Hill's return to form has been the catalyst for Ardley's resurgence in recent weeks, this goal takes him into double figures for the season for League and Cup competition. No solace for the Heathens from that statistic, out of his ten goals tally so far six have been scored against Flackwell Heath!

Manager Dan Still said "I am delighted to be in what is now my fourth final in three seasons at the club. I have a squad of 17 players and only 14 will be able to compete in the Final for the trophy. So I have warned the players that every time they pull on a shirt in the next few weeks they are competing for a place in that 14".

Ardley United 1 - Shrivenham 3 • 8th March

Ardley suffered their first loss after six straight wins in League and Cup competition, but the inconsistency that has haunted them all season was clear to see.

Shrivenham put the home side under early pressure. The opening goal on 19 minutes, came from a cross into the box to Dennis King, who was allowed too much space. King took the opportunity to volley the ball into the net.

In the last ten minutes of the first half the home side applied some pressure to try and get back on level terms. Winning numerous corners, Phil Martin made some excellent deliveries from the flag, but Ardley failed to take advantage of the chances.

Half Time Ardley United 0- Shrivenham 1

Before the home side could even consider getting back in the game a schoolboy mix up between Tom Smith and goalkeeper Matt Dixon allowed TJ Bohane into score a simple tap in.

Matty Bennett, scored his fourth goal for Shrivenham since moving to the club from Division One Wootton Bassett in February, taking Shrivenhams' tally to 3-0 on 63 minutes.

For a while it looked liked Shrivenham would score at will. However Manager Dan Still made several changes introducing Jason Castella, allowing Leon Gordon to move up front with the Beckett brothers, Darren and Adam forming part of a mid-field diamond.

Suddenly Ardley looked alive, after applying pressure the re-structuring brought dividends when Leon Gordon (right) volleyed home from close range.

Following this Gordon again looked lively as he raced wide to cross for Chris Hill who was unmarked in the middle of the goal area, but fired over the bar.

Adam Beckett then had a chance, really testing the away keeper from 25 yards.

With five minutes remaining Castella hit a wonderful pass to Adam Beckett in the box which hit a Shrivenham defenders hand, but despite appeals the referee waived play on.

A disappointing day again for Ardley, only the last fifteen minutes showed the fight required to compete in this League.

SoccerKits Plus Supplementary Cup • 1st March

Winterbourne 0 - Ardley United 0 (AET - Ardley go through 4-3 on penalties)

Ardley made the long trip to Bristol to face Winterbourne a side competing at the top of Division One West, who were looking for a second Premier League scalp after knocking out Lydney Town in the previous round.

Sadly the weather was the unexpected factor in the game as the open pitch was subject to gale force winds preventing either side from playing any football. With the wind at their backs, the home side started brighter and Winterbourne's leading marksman, Jimmy Potts, forced Ardley keeper Matt Dixon into a fine save.

Several excellent free kicks from Adam Richmond were the only other incidents of note during a stale first period.

Half Time Winterboune 0 – Ardley United 0

The second half was little better. Ardley went in search of the winner, with only moments normal time left Danny Mason forced a brilliant save from the home keeper, who tipped the ball over the bar.

Extra time again found the home goal custodian at his best when he did well to stop an Alex Feaver header and the block the rebound. He again thwarted Ardley when he made his best stop in the 2nd period of extra time making a one handed save to deny an Adam Beckett 25 yard free kick.  Then the final whistle started the lottery, that is a penalty shoot out.

Danny Mason, Adam Richmond scored, before Adam Beckett had his kick saved. But Matt Dixon's fine save kept Ardley in the game, Chris Hill gave Ardley the advantage and Tom Green had the chance to win the tie but blazed over the bar.

In sudden death Winterbourne missed their kick allowing Alex Feaver to score from the spot, keeping the holders in the Supplementary Cup.

HPL Press Floodlit Cup Semi Final - First Leg

Flackwell Heath 0 Ardley United 4

Ardley faced a strong Flackwell side that included former Brackley Town star Matt Glynn. Following Ardley's huge league victory 7 days before the away side were cautious of the backlash and over confidence.

Flackwell started bright, Ardleys' Ian Trott was forced into some strong defending early in the game when the ball was bouncing around in the Ardley penalty area. However Ardley got their noses in front after only 8 minutes when Tom Smiths' deep cross was headed back across goal by Chris Hill, Leon Gordon (left) nipped in ahead of the keeper to head home.

The game then developed into a midfield battle with both sides working hard to get a foothold in the game, Ian Trott was again called upon in the 35th minute, doing well to head away a teasing cross.

On the stroke of half time Ardley got the all important goal when Smith again crossed for Hill who took the ball with a great first touch before hooking a volley over his shoulder which looped over the keeper and nestled in the net.

Half Time: Flackwell 0 - Ardley 2

Ardley took real control at the start of the second half. With only three minutes played of the re-start the home keeper dropped Steve Garbutt's cross, Alex Feaver (right) was on hand to poke home the third goal.

Within a minute Ardley were rampant again, a Phil Martin ball found Chris Hill, whose excellent pass gave Leon Gordon the chance to burst into the box where he slid the ball under the advancing keeper for the fourth and final goal of the game.

Flackwell threw everything at Ardley, playing three strikers, but that allowed Ardley more space to counter. Feaver and Gordon could both have added to their tally. Chris Hill also forced the keeper into an excellent diving save before the end of the game.

Ardley Manager Dan Still was full of praise for the way the whole team defended on the front foot and made life difficult for Flackwell, however he was quick to warn "in real terms its just half time and I wont accept complacency".

Fairford Town 0 Ardley United 1 - 24th February

Last Gasp Penalty Points Reward

Ardley were made to wait until the final minutes to secure the win after enduring long periods dominating the game but without creating real opportunities. Danny Mason's conversion won the points.

The first half was a real non event as Fairford started the brighter of the two sides before Ardley began to get back into the game.

Adam Beckett supplied several crosses but failed to beat the first man and even with a succession of corners the delivery was dissapointing.

Half Time 0-0

Ardley started the second period, showing some desire to get the much needed goal.

With only two minutes on the watch a penetrating run from Adam Richmond into the box saw him shoved from behind, but despite Ardley's vocal appeal for a penalty the referee waived claims away.

The Ardley management looked to freshen up and introduced new signing Jason Costella into attack, Steve Garbutt into midfield, along with Darren Beckett who returned from injury.

All had a positive imapact on the game. Costella went on a weaving run, he attempted to round the keeper was thwarted by a last ditch challenge. Adam Beckett broke through the Fairford back line and lifted the ball over the advancing keeper only to see his effort strike the post. The home keeper also made a smart save from a subsequent Adam Beckett's free kick.

With time running out and a 0-0 draw looking the only outcome Ardley mounted another attack, the ball slid into the box towards Adam Beckett. A Fairford defender stuck out a hand to prevent the attack, presenting Ardley an 88th minute penalty opportunity. Danny Mason made no mistake from the spot to gain another valuable three points.

Ardley United 9 Flackwell Heath 1 - 19th February

Ardley posted a huge score against faltering Flackwell Heath, making it three wins on the bounce in the Sport Italia Hellenic League Premier Division for the resurgent Oxfordshire team.

Without first team regulars Ian Trott, Tom Willment and Darren Beckett , manager Dan Still was forced again to shuffle the back.

Tom Smith returned from injury to partner Danny Mason at the heart of the defence, with Massimo Lagioia making his first appearance of the season for the senior team at right back.

Ardley were out of the blocks early, taking advantage of Flackwell’s 3-5-2 system by getting their full backs out to join in the play. It was that pattern of play that lead to the first goal on 9 minutes when Phil Martin did well to roll in Adam Richmond on the left flank and his wonderful first time cross was fired home by Chris Hill ( right).

Flackwell continued to play a short passing game but Ardley’s high tempo kept them at bay. With 18 minutes played Chris Hill and Alex Feaver pressured the Flackwell keeper after a back pass. The ball rebounded to Leon Gordon whose shot was clearly handled on the line giving Ardley a spot kick, plus reducing Flackwell to 10 men for the duration of the game. Danny Mason duly dispatched the penalty.

Chris Johnson (left) then got his first goal for the club since signing from Witney just after Christmas, when he collected a Phil Martin cross , firing the ball home from 12 yards.

With only 35 minutes on the clock Ardley then effectively killed the game as a contest when Chris Hill collected the ball in the right hand channel and steered into the box. Taking on and beating a defender, before cutting in to unleash a fierce left foot drive. The Heathens keeper did well to the shot but Hill would not be denied, pouncing on the rebound to fire in his second and Ardley’s fourth goal of the game.

HT 4-0

It took the home side only five minutes of the second half to register another goal when Chris Johnson’s diving header from a Phil Martin cross made it five.

Nine minutes later skipper Tom Green got in the act, driving home a shot from 20 yards after Flackwell failed to clear their lines. Tom Green was instrumental in all of Ardley’s play and both Lagioia and Richmond were providing crosses for the strikers on a regular basis.

Minutes later Leon Gordon (right) scored a contender for goal of the season. Flackwell's defence headed clear another cross, as the ball was dropping from the air Leon Gordon attacked the ball from fully 30 yards, striking a dipping volley on the outside of his right foot which flew into the top corner.

Chris Hill then completed his hat-trick by collecting the ball on the shoulder of the last defender, accelerating away he rounded the keeper with aplomb before stroking the ball into the unguarded net.

The ninth and final goal for Ardley came when substitute Adam Beckett collected a pass from Steve Garbutt in the box, he did well to dig the ball out from under his feet to guide it into the bottom corner.

Flackwell did manage a consolation when on 86 minutes some lacklustre work in the mid field allowed Ricardo Cannon the chance to run into the right had channel where he finished well stroking the ball into the bottom corner.

After the match Dan Still commented “Whist I am obviously pleased with the result, Flackwell did play 80 minutes with ten men. However my players used that advantage by finding space to play, though regardless of many goals you score it is still only three points and we must now continue to find greater consistency in our displays”.

Pegasus Juniors 1 Ardley United 3 - 16th February

Ardley battled to gain 3 points, in a game where they really didn't find any rhythm.

Missing full backs Tom Smith and Adam Richmond, manager Dan Still changed the line up to play Tom Willment at right back and give a first start to Andy Holderin from the reserves at left back.

Pegasus started much the brighter and Ardley were forced to defend their 18 yard box for long periods, but Ian Trott and Danny Mason held firm.

Just before the half hour Ardley had a rare attack with Adam Beckett forcing a corner, from the resulting kick the ball seemed to bounce around the 6 yard box before Ian Trott (left) hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the net to open the scoring.

Two minutes later Chris Hill chased a long ball forward, the home sides keeper appeared to have just won the race collecting the ball, only to make the most bizarre decision by following through with a kung fu kick on Hill leaving the referee little choice but to award Ardley a penalty which Danny Mason converted.

Half Time 0-2

Again it was the home side who started much the brighter in the second period but with only five minutes on the clock Phil Martin's cross field ball found Leon Gordon coming in from the right, though his effort only found the side netting.

That should have killed the game, but on 55 minutes Pegasus were back in it when Martin failed to stop a ball being played into the box and Mortlock beat Trott to the ball from the cross to poke home.

Ardley were forced into a change when Chris Hill could not continue and hot-shot Alex Feaver was given a chance to add to his tally.

With 66 minutes played, Ardley killed the game when Phil Martin's shot at the near post was blocked. Both Adam Beckett and Alex Feaver scrapped for the rebound, the ball looped in the air for skipper Tom Green (right) to bravely head the ball into the top corner. That was Green's final contribution as he was left bloodied and slightly dazed.

Ardley's makeshift back four held firm well supported by Steve Garbutt and Chris Johnson in midfield who were broke up offensive play well, leaving Matt Dixon little to do in goal as Ardley collected three points.

Two games in five days producing a much needed six points. Another chance to consolidate league position on Tuesday night at The Rec when Flackwell Heath visit for Ardley's 30th league game of the season Kick Off 7.30pm.

Hook Norton 0 Ardley United 5 - 12th February

Ardley gave a performance more reminiscent to the form of last season, as they tore apart near neighbours Hook Norton.

One of the stars of the show was returning hero Chris Hill (right). Chris had taken a self imposed break from football over the last three weeks in an attempt to shake off a persistent ankle injury and the decision looks to have been an inspiration as he returned with a brace and a man of the match performance.

Ardley were quickly into their stride and the movement of Adam Beckett was causing the Hook Norton back line problems and on 10 minutes it was his bending run that saw him break free in the right hand channel before crossing for Hill to fire home from 6 yards out. Ardley continued to attack and on 25 minutes a Phil Martin corner was poked home by Hill for his second goal as Hook Norton keeper Richard Meadows got caught in no mans land.

With Ardley in the ascendancy Beckett and Hill combined for Hill to race clear on goal, as he was about to pull the trigger he was crudely fouled by Craig Dore. With Dore being the last line of defence the outcome seemed inevitable but to the amazement of everyone (including Dore) the referee only produced a yellow card.

Within minutes of feeling hard done by, Phil Martin slotted home the third by collecting a free kick from Adam Richmond before beating two players to fire home.

Hook Norton looked to respond by making an instant substitution swapping Joe Davies for Andrew Stridder and going with 3 strikers, however before they had chance to settle Mark Griffin reacted to a late challenge from Tom Green by chasing him several yards before shoving him in the face. This time the referee took the appropriate course of action and issued a straight red card while Green was cautioned for the tackle.

Half Time 3-0

The momentum stayed with Ardley in the second half and it within minutes a Phil Martin cross was fired just over the bar by Adam Beckett.

Then on 55 minutes Hill protected the ball before rolling it to Leon Gordon, his diagonal ball split the Hook Norton defence as Martin ran in off the shoulder of Craig Dore to lob the advancing Richard Meadows and score his 2nd and Ardley’s 4th.

Further chances went begging before Chris Johnson chipped a delightful ball to Leon Gordon in the right hand channel and his powerful cross left sub Andy Prescott (left) with the easiest of chances from 2 yards out to score the 5th goal on 86 minutes that sealed an emphatic win.

Ardley United 1 Highworth Town 3 - 9th February

Ardley's patched up side failed to impress against the resurgent Highworthians.

With Danny Mason, Ian Trott, Darren Beckett and Adam Hamp, all regular first team players, ruled out through injury. Steve Garbutt was forced to play at centre back, plus an injury to Adam Beckett during Thursdays training session, meant Manager Dan Still had to include him on the bench as a last resort utility, instead of in the starting line up.

Ardley started bright and with only 44 seconds on the watch skipper Tom Green fired just over the bar, then it was Leon Gordon who went close with volley that skimmed the top of the bar.

After the first quarter of an hour Highworth took control of the game and Matt Dixon (left) was called upon to make several excellent stops, but on 33 minutes Highworth took the lead with a good header from Phil Corcoran, who latched on to the ball supplied by a free kick.

Half Time 0-1

In the second period Ardley started bright with Phil Martin and Adam Richmond providing good crosses, but before they could find the equaliser, they were hit with a sucker punch. Tom Smith gave away a poor foul and a good delivery into the box was well headed towards goal, keeper Dixon made another fine double save, before the rebound was poked home by Chris Hill.

Ardley started to dominate in an attempt to get into the game and it was another set play when Phil Martin's delivery was headed home by the in form Alex Feaver (right), taking his first team goal tally to six in six games.

Ardley pushed to level the score but couldn't find a way through. With time running out Matt Dixon rushed a clearance giving possession to the opponents. Resulting in another breakaway goal scored by Arthur Levett on 90 minutes, which sealed the three points for Highworth.

Ardley United 4 Bisley Sports 2 (aet) - 26th January

Premier Division Ardley progressed to the SoccerKits Plus Supplementary Cup second round after a disappointing first half display which saw the home side 2-1 behind at the interval, against a side from Division One East of the Hellenic League.

Ardley welcomed back Alex Feaver who is undergoing treatment for a recurring injury as reported earlier this week, though it would appear his medical advisers do not believe he would do further harm by playing. He and Adam Beckett (pictured right) were soon troubling the Bisley Sports back line with pace, but it was Phil Martin who opened the scoring on 11 minutes firing home from just inside the box. This was the boost Phil Martin required starting his first game for over two months after returning from a successful loan spell in Northampton to regain match fitness.

Adam Beckett and Leon Gordon both tested the Bisley keeper before the away side broke away down the right and put a cross into the box that Danny Mason turned into his own net.

This gave Bisley a lift and Ardley stopped creating chances as the away side got on top. Ardley were struggling to deal with the threat from wide, but on the stroke of half time it was a straight ball that split the defence leaving Pymm to give Bisley a 2-1 half time lead.

Half Time: Ardley United 1 Bisley Sports 2

Manager Dan Still's half time involvement in the dressing room re-invigorated the home team, with Ardley starting the second half well.

Within 3 minutes of the re-start Adam Beckett did well to nip in front of a defender to retain possession, delivering the ball to Leon Gordon whose first time pass released Alex Feaver. The young striker raced through on goal to drive home an equaliser, his fifth goal in 3 matches.

Feaver then looked to have won the game heading home a Phil Martin cross, but a late flag ruled out the goal. No further goals were scored in the half, the Bisley defence then held firm to take the game into extra time.

Extra Time

Within moments of extra time starting Phil Martin forced the keeper in to a fine save, sub Andy Prescott fired a strike against the post, but no gain was made in the first period .

In the final 15 minutes Ardley continued to press and again the keeper saved well from Danny Mason who found himself unmarked at the far post. With 107 minutes played Andy Prescott (left) finally found the way through when he collected the ball wide and his shot flew into the top corner of the goal.

Adam Beckett finished the game as a contest on 113 minutes when he collected a fine pass from Leon Gordon to pass the ball into the net for the final goal of the game.

Ardley United 1 Witney United 4 - 22nd January

Ardley were very much second best in a contest that saw high flying Witney United claim a comfortable victory and go some way to avenge the 5-1 defeat Ardley inflicted on them in both the league & FA Vase earlier in the season.

Missing, in-form Alex Feaver, plus Darren Beckett & Adam Hamp from the weekend, manager Dan Still was forced to shuffle the pack.

Before Ardley could even begin to settle Witney were dominating the game and only last ditch defending and some good goalkeeping from Matt Dixon kept the game alive.

However Witney went ahead in the 4th minute with a goal from Kevin Lewis. That became 2-0 when Andrew Younie netted his 10th league goal of the season in the 35th minute. Ardley failed to register a shot on goal in the first half.

HT 0-2

Ardley made a double substitution at the break and changed shape in an attempt to get back into the game. The first twenty minutes were encouraging as Phil Martin was providing crosses from the left, but the Ardley strikers failed to be in the right place at the right time to get the goal they craved.

Witney then ended the game as a contest in the 67th minute when former Ardley player Gary WIckens scored on a break away following the breakdown of an Ardley attack.

Danny Mason (right) did get a consolation from the spot after Ian Trott was kicked off the ball in the box that saw Witney reduced to ten men for the final 10 minutes.

That failed to lift the home side that appeared to be resigned to defeat and with more lacklustre defending another Ardley old boy Luke Brandon made the final score 4-1 in the 78th minute.

Ardley will need to play much better as they seek to defend the SoccerKits Plus Supplementary Cup on Saturday at home to Bisley Sports.

Ardley United 4 Carterton FC 0 -19th January

Ardley showed glimpses of last seasons form to pick up 3 points over a struggling Carterton.

After early exchanges were equal in the first ten minutes of the half, until captain Tom Green (left) broke the deadock when he expertly headed home Danny Mason's wicked cross.

Chris Hill had looked a constant threat in the opposition box and the giant Ian Trott was causing Carterton problems from corners and set plays. However Ardley could not manage to forge any further clear cut chances in the 1st half.

Half Time: Ardley United 1 Carterton 0

In the second period it was one way traffic and Alex Feaver (right) doubled the lead after 55 minutes of play when he headed home Adam Richmonds' cross.

Six minutes later Ardley added the third.Chris Hill did well to find Adam Beckett, a wonderful delivery from Becks found Feaver in front of an empty net to get his second of the match. Young Alex Feaver is repaying dividends on Dan Still's decision to give him a a place in the first team, having now scored four goals in his last two games.

Chances continued to come and the Carterton keeper made a good save when Chris Hill was through one on one. Soon after Feaver hit the post and the ball rebounded to the impressive Chris Johnson, but with the goal gapping he pulled his shot wide.

Substitute Andy Prescott looked to get in the act when he out muscled the defence to fire a strike just wide of the far post.

On 83 minutes Leon Gordon (left) completed the scoring. Adam Hamp's pass released Andy Prescott who raced into the left hand channel before firing the ball across the box for Gordon to slide the ball in at the near post.

A excellent win, though Ardley will now need to show the same the level of determination when they face the leagues' in form title contenders Witney United on Tuesday evening (22nd January).

Ardley Utd 3 - Abingdon Town 0 • 8th January
HPL Floodlit Cup Quarter Final

Ardley put their poor league form behind them and progressed to the semi final of the floodlight cup.

Ardley Manager Dan Still made changes following the 2-0 league defeat at Wantage and introduced striker Alex Feaver who had been scoring goals in the reserves in recent weeks, Adam Beckett and Tom Smith also returned to the starting line up.

A vicious wind was with Abingdon in the 1st half and they played the ball forward quickly using the conditions but despite territorial advantage rarely threatened. Ardley slowly gained momentum and Gordon and Feaver began causing the Abingdon defence problems. Feaver shot wide after spinning the defender at the front post, then again dragged the ball across goal after Gordon slid the ball into his path. Ardley were beginning to dominate and Danny Morgan cleared the ball off the line after Gordon and Trott went close from a corner. Feaver again was only just off the mark when his dipping effort grazed the top of the bar.

Adam Beckett then crashed the ball against the bar but in doing so pulled a thigh muscle and was replaced by Chris Hill. Hill was soon in the thick of things forcing the keeper into a good save, then had the ball in the net only to be denied by the linesman's flag.

HT 0-0

Ardley started where they left off but Hill was wasteful with several efforts. Against the run of play Trott gave away a free kick on the edge of the box and Bloomfield crashed the free kick against the bar to the relief of a stranded Dixon in the Ardley goal.

On 57 minutes Feaver finally gave Ardley the lead they deserved when Dixon's long kick forward was chased down by Feaver who lobbed home form 30 yards. With 70 minutes on the watch Feaver grabbed his second, Green won the ball some 35 yards from goal and everyone seemed to stop expecting a foul, but Feaver hit a thunderous effort that flew into the top corner.

Darren Beckett completed the scoring minutes later when Abingdon's keeper picked up a back pass. As the free kick was awarded, the quick thinking Hill grabbed the ball and passed the ball square to Beckett to fire into an empty net while Abingdon were still protesting.

Ardley will be pleased with the win but must now transfer the performance to the league.

Wantage Town 2 - 0 Ardley United • 5th January 2008

Two high quality first half goals separated these two sides, each of whom contributed to an entertaining game, played on a deteriorating surface as the greasy pitch turned to mud as the rain persisted.

Wantage were fronted by Nathan Hall and Danny Keen, each of whom spurned early chances, as Wantage took the game to Ardley in the first quarter. 22 minutes into the game, Matty Horsell hinted at what was to come from Wantage, beating several players before forcing a great save from Matt Dixon in the Ardley goal.

But it was Ardley who netted first from a corner in the 26th minute, the goal being disallowed for a foul on Wantage keeper Luke Alford. Both goalkeepers were well protected by Referee Chris Wicks, who consistently penalised challenges on both keepers, particularly from corners.

Wantage took the lead in the 31st minute with a goal of great quality. A pin point cross from Tom Austin to the far post found Matty Horsell, whose first touch neatly placed the ball in the path of Danny Allen, whose precisely placed shot gave Dixon no chance.

Three minutes later, Wantage increased their lead through a fine individual effort from the enterprising Matty Horsell on Wantage’s left wing. Horsell received the ball just inside Ardley’s half and set off at pace. Skating past several defenders, Horsell finished the run with an unstoppable shot past the rooted Dixon in the Ardley goal. Horsell’s close control was remarkable bearing in mind the ground condition. Just before the half-time whistle, Nathan Hall went close after good work from Tom Austin on Wantage’s right wing.

Half Time: 1 – 0

The second half mirrored the first, with Wantage shading Ardley in terms of possession and producing more chances. In the 61st minute Tom Austin was put through by a fine ball from Danny Keen, only to see his shot slip narrowly past the post. Substitute Gary Hartley brought the best out of Matt Dixon, Hartley’s header being well saved by the Ardley Keeper.

Ardley United 2 - 4 Milton United • 29th December

One bogey team for Milton manager Gary Ackling is Ardley, in the majority of the fixtures the two sides have played in the past three years Ardley have taken the spoils, but the hex was finally broken with a solid performance from the visiting Miltonians.

With players on the injury list and on vacation, a rare start for Coach Mattie Whitehead was sealed after four minutes, when the Milton player/coach hit one of his sweet drives out on the left of the penalty area giving Ian Dixon in the home team goal no chance.

Four minutes later Whitehead was again involved in the build up for the second Milton United goal, picking the ball up on the half way line he placed a shot over the defensive guard out towards the right corner, speedy Jemel Johnson out paced the defence to reach the ball first. Shaking off attention he hopefully hit the ball hard and low across the goal, which struck the legs of two defenders and again Dixon was left with nothing he could do to stop the goal.

Ardley got back into the run mid way through the half, with a couple of close encounters on goal, and drew a goal back on 21 minutes from a sweet corner and equally competent header by Adam Hamp who rose above the Milton defence unimpeded and headed the ball past Craig Griffiths from four yards out. With both sides trying to gain advantage it took another 20 minutes to resolve any advantage and that went to another Hellenic League "Old Stager" Glyn Jones. With Milton awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area Jones took command set up his stage and hit an accomplished shot which curled round the wall and entered the goal in the bottom right hand corner of the net with nothing Dixon could do to avert it.

Half Time: 1 - 3

Starting the second half the home team now had the advantage of the infamous Ardley slope, but the Miltonians still took the game to them and were rewarded with a fourth goal eight minutes after the restart. Taken by Robbie Sadler, the player watched the deceptive shot leave his foot, curl round at waist height and enter the net unimpeded by anyone in the crowded box. Ardley tried to get back into the match though Milton defended well. The home side were able to claim one further goal when Steve Garbutt was presented with an excellent cross from near to the corner post, and he completed it with an accomplished header from inside the penalty area.

Ardley United 3 - 0 AFC Wallingford • 12th December

Wallingford fell to another defeat with a score line that did not reflect a spirited performance.

The visitors got off to yet another awful start when John Shea could not hold onto a high cross after 2 minutes and Adam Beckett drove the ball home into an unguarded net. It was typical of Wallingford’s season that they were immediately up against it, but they did not let their heads drop and almost found an equaliser – Sean Weston broke clear in the box and only a last ditch tackle prevented him from scoring. Wallingford showed plenty of Endeavour, and on a frosty pitch, they passed the ball around nicely. Andrew Stourton went close on fifteen minutes, cutting back inside from the left and curling the ball over the keeper, but onto the roof of the net. At the other end, Ardley exploited a few gaps in the Wallingford defence. Trott headed over from 5 yards following a corner and Shea had to make an excellent reflex save to deny the pacy Ardley winger Leon Gordon.

Just before half time the visitors had Ardley on the rack with a number of dangerous attacks. After a ball down the line from young defender Aaron Davies, Michael Fellows scrapped and won the ball on the right and fed Weston on the edge of the area and the striker tried his luck from 15 yards out, but smashed his shot into the side netting.

Half Time: 1 - 0

Wallingford started brightly again in the second half, putting the home side under pressure from the off. However, it was another high ball into the box that undid the visitors after 60 minutes. Chris Hill curled in a fairly innocuous high cross, but Steve Garbutt rose highest and beat Shea with a brilliant looping header from 15 yards out.

Hill then blasted a great chance over the bar after Shea had parried a close range shot.

Wallingford’s young side were still passing the ball around well, however and James Lambert went close with a long range deflected shot that flew just wide. The hard working Peter Lamont then released Michael Fellows on the edge of the area and he struck a powerful effort first time which just brushed the crossbar. In the 90th minute Brad Chalmers fouled substitute Phil Martin in the box and Danny Mason stepped up to smash the penalty home for Ardley for a disappointing 3-0 score-line.

After a disastrous start to the season, Wallingford’s young team is starting to show some promise, but they must start converting good performances into results if they are to drag themselves out of the relegation zone.

Harrow Hill 1 Ardley United 2 • 1st December

Ardley United recorded their first league win for more than two months - with a 2-1 victory away to basement club Harrow Hill.

Missing the suspended Adam Hamp and Leon Gordon, Ardley started brightly on a heavy pitch. Andy Prescott missed a great chance, while Adam Richmond saw his powerful drive saved.

Prescott eventually broke the deadlock when he fired into the roof of the net from just inside the box. Against the run of play, Harrow Hill levelled on the hour. A mix-up involving Danny Mason and Matt Dixon led to Eddie Weyman netting a simple goal.

Ten minutes from time, Ardley's Tom Smith unleashed a 40-yard pile-driver that the keeper did well to turn around the post.

From the resulting corner Steve Garbutt's wicked delivery found the far corner of the net to nick the victory.

Shortwood United 3 - 1 Ardley United • 10th November

Shortwood ultimately claimed the three points from this Hellenic League fixture but there were periods in the second half when they looked as though they would allow Ardley to come back and claim an unlikely draw.

The first half was one of the most one sided 45 minutes of play you are ever likely to see and only Wood’s inability to remain on onside, and a combination of good goal keeping and poor finishing, prevented them from having an unassailable lead by half time.

Wood attacked from the kick off and twice Mike Green’s pin point corners found Andy Hoskins’ head, the first just cleared the bar and the second forced keeper Dixon into a smart save. Trott almost blasted the ball into his own net and Dixon dealt with a succession of dangerous crosses from Ben Pugh just as Wood’s forwards seemed certain to score. Ben Pugh and John Cant controlled the play and combined really well and Dixon was constantly busy. At the other end Pearce was a virtual spectator. Dixon was powerless, however, to prevent Wood taking the lead in the 35th minute. He punched yet another cross off the head of Hoskins and the ball fell to James Baldwin who shot through a ruck of players low into the net. Chances continued to come and go and it was on the stroke of half time before Pearce found his goal threatened.

Half Time: 1 - 0

The second half started with Wood still going forward and Dixon had to tip over a shot from Mammola. Ardley started to go forward with more purpose and Pearce had to make his first serious save from Andrews. Gordon and Prescott both shot wide from good positions and Gordon tripped over his own feet when through on goal. Dixon then made a cracking save to deny Hoskins before Wood scored their second after 74 minutes. Baldwin was brought down 25 yards out and Ben Pugh’s free kick was deflected in. This should have settled Wood’s nerves but Ardley forced their way back in when Chris Hill shot home off the post. Seconds later Pearce made a fine reaction save and Prescott’s flicked effort was narrowly wide. With two minutes to go a corner dropped at the feet of Andy Hoskins who scored at the second attempt from 6 yards.

Abingdon Town 2 - Ardley United 2 • 6th November

Tom Smith was the hero for Ardley United as his late equaliser salvaged a point for his side at Abingdon Town in the Premier Division .

With time almost up it looked as though Ardley would go down to their first defeat in three games, but up popped Smith to level after latching onto Chris Hill's flick.

Ardley had got off to the perfect start when Adam Beckett cracked home from 30 yards on eight minutes. However, on 14 minutes, Abingdon were level when the unlucky Danny Mason deflected Aaron Williams's cross into his own net.

And it got worse for Ardley when Carl Bloomfield gave Abingdon the lead on the stroke of half-time. After the break, Ardley had a couple of half-chances, but it looked as though they would return empty-handed, only for Smith to slot home the equaliser.

Boss Dan Still, whose side visit Shortwood United on Saturday, felt the change in tactics after the break proved crucial.

"We brought on Steve Garbutt (for Tom Green) and Adan Hamp (for Rob Carrick) and it seemed to do the trick," said Still. "It freshened us up and I thought we had more of the play in the second half. We had a couple of half-chances and I thought that was it, but then Tom (Smith) scores a vital goal right at the end."

"That's three games without a loss and we'll be doing all we can to stretch that to four against Shortwood. It's going to be tough. Their league position doesn't reflect how they have been doing because they have already taken a few Southern League scalps in the FA Cup this season."

Almondsbury Town 1 Ardley United 1 • 13th October

Ardley are denied at the death

Ardley United were denied a shock 1-0 victory at leaders Almondsbury Town by a late equaliser.

The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute of Saturday's Premier Division clash. Adam Hamp did well with his back to goal to tee up Steve Garbutt, whose 20-yard strike took a slight deflection before crashing into the bottom corner.

Keeper Steve Edwards made a brilliant save from a header just before half-time to preserve Ardley's advantage.

Ardley played on the counter-attack in the second half, and came close to extending their lead. Andy Prescott brought out a fine save from the Almonsbury keeper with a rasping drive, and Danny Mason's effort shaved a post.

Ardley held on to their lead until the 85th minute when Zaid Omar was adjudged to have fouled in the area, and Kane Ingram made no mistake with the spot-kick.

Witney United 1 – 5 Ardley United • 6th October

Whoever said lightening doesn’t strike twice needs to explain that to all those who follow these two sides as Ardley repeated the score-line of their league triumph earlier in the season.

Witneywere hopeful of a good start but it couldn’t have been any worse when an in swinging free-kick on two minutes was inadvertently flicked into his own net by the head of Luke Brandon against his former club. This was a major shock but Witney almost hauled themselves level minutes later when Stuart Douglas released Kevin Lewis who managed to lob Steve Edwards but it didn’t have enough power and Adam Richmond was able to clear. On 19 minutes the visitors went further ahead with a goal that had controversy and an awful mistake. A long ball saw Adam Hamp go towards the ball before changing his mind, the assistant referee kept his flag down and then Chris Webb inexplicably missed the ball completely leaving Steve Garbutt with a completely empty net to tap into. United pressed again though, as they tried to pull level and on 25 minutes they got their reward. A corner by Jon Steedman was met powerfully by the head of Gary Wickens and the ball crashed into the roof of the net off the underside of the bar. The home side were celebrating but moments later the joy was short lived. Another corner by Steedman caused havoc and appeared to go directly in as keeper Edwards scrambled the ball onto the post and then to safety but the officials were happy the ball hadn’t gone in. With Witney back in the game they pressed the self destruct button again before the interval. Richmond burst in from the flank and a reckless challenge by Douglas saw him pulled down for a penalty. Danny Mason stepped up and smashed the ball past Webb to restore the two goal advantage.

Half Time: 1 - 3

Witney were looking for a better start than they got in the first but they got exactly the same as the visitors struck again within two minutes. The ball was played into the feet of Phil Martin who had his back to goal but with three United defenders around him he was allowed to turn and toe poke the ball past Webb's despairing dive. Witney needed a goal and quickly and when Lewis done well to tee up John McMahon the United support hoped but then groaned as a good chance went flying over the bar. The home side were pressing but with little in the way of creativity and in truth the Ardley backline were dealing comfortably with what the Blanketmen had to throw at them. It got worse for United with just eighteen minutes remaining when a long clearance was allowed to bounce before Adam Hamp ran on and calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net for the visitor’s fifth goal. Again United tried to press and Harry Burnley and Wickens again went close but United were left to rue a dreadful afternoon and an early exit from the FA Vase.

North Leigh 5 - 2 Ardley United • 18th September

Returning to league action for the first time this month, North Leigh maintained their one hundred percent home record with an impressive 5-2 win over Ardley United as a pulsating seven goal thriller provided a feast of entertainment for the crowd who were richly rewarded for opting to attend Eynsham Park rather than remain indoors for live televised Champions League football.
A bizarre situation arose prior to kick-off as both teams emerged clad in yellow shirts, the visitors eventually changing into blue, and both sides started with high tempo play after a twenty-five minute delay, but it was the home side who opened the scoring on 18 minutes as a Simon Futcher corner landed at the feet of Liam Hope inside the six yard box and he fired home despite Ardley appeals for hand ball. A surging Chris Allen run and shot could have made it two, but the visitors were level on 26 minutes as an in-swinging Adam Beckett corner evaded everyone including Leigh keeper Richard Barrett and landed in the back of the net for 1-1.

A flowing North Leigh move on 38 minutes ended with Simon Futcher running onto Allen's precise pass and from the corner of the area his first time shot flew past Ardley keeper Steve Edwards to hit the far bottom corner of the net, and four minutes later it was 3-1 as Allen fired home from the penalty spot after a rash and needless challenge on Liam Hope. What looked to be an even more blatant penalty was refused by the referee, with whom the visitors were not happy as he blew for half-time.
Half Time: 3 - 1
The opening fifteen minutes of the second half were even more incident-packed, with Ardley showing their resilience by making it 3-2 on 52 minutes as Luke Holden found himself with time and space following a left wing cross, and he lashed the ball into the roof of the net, and a minute later former Leigh favourite Adam Hamp fired just over. Within eight minutes an Ardley come-back was virtually extinguished as super-sub Mark Dennis proved to be a menace to the visitors with two goals in five minutes. With almost his first touch, having replaced the injured Allen, his low angled shot made it 4-2 after a long Stuart Huxley throw was helped on by Joe Burnell, and on the hour mark it was 5-2 as Dennis ran clear into the area and finished with aplomb as he deceived the advancing keeper and fired home to give the home side a three goal lead and some breathing space to see out the remaining half hour and secure all three points against a spirited Ardley side who showed enough on the night to suggest they will be a match for most opponents through the season.

Kidlington 1 - 0 Ardley United • 11th September

When the match started it was Ardley who took the early initiative. Kidlington looked a little nervous in the early encounters, which was no surprise after the slack early goals they had given away in their previous two matches. On the night there was a resolve in the Kidlington side and they were determined that this would not happen again. On 15 minutes Kidlington had their first chance. A cross from Mark Baker found Deabill, but the big striker could not get his header on target. After this the game was played out predominantly in the middle of the park. There were shots at goal at both ends, though all of them were either weak or off target. Kidlington almost took the lead when a good move involving Baker and Deabill set up Nathan Meade. Meade lifted his shot over Ardley keeper Steve Edwards, but some how a defender managed to get the faintest of touches onto it, which deflected it wide. From the resultant corner, taken by Meade, James Philpott headed narrowly wide. Ardley had their first real chance of the match when Kidlington Old Boy Luke Holden seized control of a loose ball some 25 yards out. He advanced on goal but shoot tamely and keeper Matty Hutton, who saved it easily. Ardley had a couple of late half chances, through Steve Garbutt and Holden again, but could not find the target though.

Half Time: 0 – 0

Kidlington started the second half with a ‘zest’ for attacking, taking the game immediately to the visitors. In the first few minutes Darren Moore came close to scoring after he was put in on goal by a flick on from Deabill, unfortunately for Kidlington his powerful shot went over the bar. Darren Moore was starting to cause all sorts of problems for Ardley with his trickery and pace. Moore running flat out was body checked by Mark O’Hara which earned the veteran a booking, again. The Kidlington attack was keeping the pressure firmly on Ardley now. Deabill saw another effort pass narrowly wide of the mark. A rare Ardley attack saw them awarded a free kick in a central position, just outside the box. Chris Hill took it and blasted his shot well over the bar. The pressure was building now from Kidlington and it eventually told on 75 minutes. Michael Alexis delivered a fantastic corner kick, from which Deabill out jumped the Ardley defenders and bulleted a header into the net, for a justified lead. After this Ardley made several substitutions to try and get back into the match. Ultimately this was too little to late as Kidlington were now truly holding the upper hand. Another Kidlington old boy Danny Mason did manage to get a header at goal from a corner, but again Young Hutton saved well. Kidlington were still searching for a second killer goal, and very nearly got it in the 86th minute. After some good work out wide left Tai Hulbert-Thomas delivered a super cross to Deabill but his headed shot beat keeper Edwards and came back off the bar, when the move really deserved a goal. A shot from Baker was well saved by Edwards. After this there was little time for any more action as the referee blew for time.

Badshot Lea 2 - Ardley United 3 • 1st September

Ardley struggle to beat Badshot

Ardley United battled to a 3-2 win at Badshot Lea in Saturday's Premier Division clash.

But they made hard work of what should have been a comfortable win. Badshot have had a player sent off in four of their opening five fixtures and this was evident in some tough tackling.

Ardley fell behind when Blake scored in the 29th minute. However, they replied quickly when Phil Martin found Adam Hamp who drilled the ball into the net from just inside the box. Danny Mason then gave Ardley the lead just before the break when he was unmarked at the back post from a corner.

Two minutes after the break, Ardley sealed the win when Hamp was tripped in the box and Mason scored from the spot.

Badshot did get a glimmer of hope with an 88th-minute penalty that Blake tucked away, but Ardley held on for three points.

Witney United 1 - 5 Ardley United • 22nd August

Witney slumped to a second successive league defeat last night when they were left on the end of a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Ardley United at Marriott’s Stadium.

Witney got off to a flier as well which made the result the more difficult to take when a floating free-kick by Jon Steedman was met by the glancing head of Gary Wickens to give United the lead. Ardley are a tough side to beat these days and they were almost level moments later when Leon Gordon got past Neil Maskell to pull back for Luke Brandon whose shot flew narrowly wide. The danger was coming down the left and Gordon combined well with Adam Richmond who found Adam Hamp with his cross but he shot wide. United were looking dangerous with the pace of Chris Harper causing problems but chances were at a premium for both sides.

It was however the visitors who struck next with an equaliser when Witney appeared to switch off and a cross by Steve Garbutt was met by Luke Holden who swept the ball home giving Webb no chance. United were dealt a major blow just seven minutes before the break when Harper was forced off injured following an earlier clash and before they had a chance to re-organise they found themselves behind.

Hamp dropped off the front line and played a slide rule pass to Holden who timed his run to perfection before calmly rounding Webb to score.

Half Time: Witney United 1 - 2 Ardley United

Within a minute of the restart the game changed in the space of 60 seconds at either end of the pitch. Some good work by Wickens released Ben Border who went on a mazy run and worked a great shooting chance but slipped at the vital moment. However Ardley broke straight to the other end of the pitch and a through ball by Brandon sent Holden through who smashed his shot in off the underside of the crossbar. With Witney shell-shocked it got worse on 56 minutes when an in-swinging corner by Richmond deceived everybody and dropped in at the back post but in the top corner. The home side were stunned and despite their best efforts were struggling to produce anything of note with too many times the visitors defence happy to clear their lines and Witney left to try and build again.

The misery was completed eighteen minutes from time when a long ball from former Witney man Tom Smith sent Holden away and Lewis Craker appeared to make connection with both ball and man. The referee awarded a penalty and with Craker last man was left with little option but to send him off. Danny Mason compounded the misery by driving the penalty home. United themselves had a good late shout for a penalty when Stuart Douglas burst into the box following a neat lay off by Mark Odom and was clipped by Richmond but the referee waved play on and Witney were left to face up to a very poor result.

FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND • 18th August

Abingdon Town 2 - 1 Ardley United

The FA Cup road to Wembley started on Saturday with the Extra Preliminary round of the competition and it saw Abingdon progress by beating fellow Hellenic League side Ardley United 2-1 at Culham Road, thanks to a late goal from substitute Mark Flanagan.

Town drew 1-1 at Ardley in midweek, and were without striker Danny Wise who was getting married, plus midfielders Danny Morgan and Jason Thomas, which meant starts for Colin Ryan and Tommy Hayday in the middle, plus a debut for new signing Mark Simms, who played just behind the front two of Larman and Bloomfield.

The game started in a steady drizzle as the unseasonable weather continued, but both sides soon settled down, and Town looked the more dominant with Simms immediately showing some good touches. Town's early pressure saw them go close in the 7th minute when Carl Bloomfield saw his shot well blocked by the defence, before 2 minutes later Simms perfectly threaded a pass right into the path of Larman only for Ardley keeper Steve Edwards to deny the Town striker's goal-bound shot. Ardley though did look to pose a significant threat themselves, particularly on the counter attack, and they went close after 12 minutes when Phil Martin burst clear and fired in a shot that required an effort from Walker to tip over the bar, then from the resultant corner Tommy Hayday was forced to clear off the line. Town were still looking the better of the two sides though, and they went close again in the 17th minute when Alder whipped in a free-kick that a defender headed into the back of Bloomfield for the ball to ricochet back and end up just wide of the upright. 29 minutes in and more good Town pressure led to a great run by Simms that ultimately saw him unleash a shot that took a deflection off a defender's leg and beyond the despairing dive of Edwards, but again fortunately for the visitors it also shaved the wrong side of the upright. On 40 minutes Town surged forward again and the ball was played through on the left for Alder to fire in a shot that zipped off the slick surface and almost evaded the clutches of Edwards before going out for another Town corner. Abingdon still didn't give up though and with the interval approaching, the dangerous looking Simms curled in a shot from the right that again went agonisingly close.

Half Time: 0 - 0

After the break Town continued to push hard for a goal, and immediately went close as Larman broke clear before forcing a good save out of Edwards. As the rain came down heavier, Town maintained their pressure and were eventually rewarded for it after 58 minutes, as Aaron Williams fired in another dangerous cross that Larman headed back into the path of Bloomfield to volley home to make it 1-0. Two minutes later and the lead was almost doubled as Tommy Hayday slammed a shot just wide before Ardley stunned Abingdon with an equaliser out of the blue after 63 minutes when Adam Hamp glanced a header home from a ball in from the right, giving Walker no chance. Following this Ardley began to look more dangerous and 5 minutes later they went close again when Walker did well to save from a Danny Mason free-kick before Simms went close for Town with a similar effort after 77 minutes. With 12 minutes to go Ardley missed a sitter when a long range effort skidded off the wet surface and Walker did well to get to it, parrying the shot right into the path of substitute Andy Prescott but the Ardley player blazed his shot wide of an open goal. Abingdon then finally secured the victory with just 10 minutes remaining, following another concerted attack the ball was only half cleared, this time into the path of substitute Mark Flanagan who shot right-footed through a crowd of players and in off the post to make it 2-1. Abingdon then managed to survive the tense last few minutes and run out winners, progressing into the next round where they will face a home tie against FA Vase runners-up AFC Totton in two weeks time.

Ardley United 1 - 1 Abingdon Town • 11th August

Abingdon continued their good start to the season with a 1-1 draw at Ardley United. Despite taking an early lead and dominating the first half, Town were forced onto the back foot in the second half and eventually conceded an equaliser with 8 minutes to go.
Centre back Christian Perkins is now recovering from a knee operation, so Town utility man Luke Beauchamp moved back into defence, with Mark Flanagan returning to the side on the left flank, and with Danny Wise unavailable due to his forthcoming marriage, Tom Larman tonight partnered Carl Bloomfield up front.

Playing down the slope in the first half Abingdon immediately settled and began to take control of the game, they were playing some good football and soon created an opening for Bloomfield to run past the defence and unleash a shot, only for it to drift wide on the strong wind. Ardley posed some solid threats too, and after 10 minutes Luke Holden managed to connect with a header that needed a good point blank block from Town keeper Gareth Walker to keep out. Abingdon were then rewarded for their efforts as they took the lead after 15 minutes, Walker launched the ball forward and the first bounce evaded everyone before running on to Tom Larman who finished in typical Larman style, nipping in to fire low past Ardley keeper Rob White and put Town 1-0 up. Five minutes later and it was almost 2-0 as full back Tony Njogu unleashed a cross-shot from the right that looked destined to nestle in the top corner of the net before White just pushed it around the post. At this stage Abingdon were playing neat, controlled football and they went close again on the half hour when a corner was only half cleared as far as Jason Thomas, who slammed a shot back in, only to see it narrowly go over the bar. Two minutes later Town yet again went close as Bloomfield got on to the end of another Town break but also shot narrowly wide but at half-time they only had the one goal to show for their endeavours.
Half Time: 0 – 1
The second half then saw a reversal of fortunes as Ardley came out looking fired up and almost from the first whistle pressed Abingdon back, though Town did go close when Bloomfield saw a good header saved after 51 minutes. Following this though the Ardley pressure started to build and Walker did well to save at the feet of Holden on the hour, then with 75 minutes gone another Ardley attack resulted in a shot into the side netting before the deserved equaliser arrived after 82 minutes when Town failed to clear their lines and Leon Gordon lobbed in an effort from wide on the left which sailed over Walker's head into the corner of the net. Two minutes later and the home side almost snatched a winner as Holden suddenly had the ball in space and from close range smacked a shot against the crossbar. After this both sides survived a couple of late scares during the 6 minutes of stoppage time before eventually settling for a 1-1 draw.
Interestingly the two sides meet again on Saturday at Culham Road in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
